Background

Hoe Mua Design is a new innovative business concept comprising of a group of Tokelauan artists in Porirua wanting to design, create and market Tokelauan & Pacific designs.

Hoe Mua was formed in November 2002 when it identified the need to promote Pacific Island greeting cards. During the month of November 2002, it was identified from our market research the lack of Pacific Island Christmas cards available to the community. As a result, a series of Tokelauan and Samoan Christmas cards was designed and produced to serve the demands expressed. The limited series of cards produced was overwhelming “sold out” in the selective retailers which took a “risk in good faith” with our innovative product.

This success was a spring board to investigate the potential to develop and market Pacific designs. To date, Hoe Mua Designs have designed and developed further greetings cards and clothing apparel using uniquely Tokelauan and original Pacific designs.

We were successful with a tender to design and develop corporate T Shirts for the Department of Internal Affairs, Pacific Network National 2002 Fono held in Wellington.

This window of opportunity to promote our services was so encouraging and very exciting. This has opened potential opportunities within the government sector.

We are currently in the tender process for other projects. Recently, we were invited to design a logo for a Tokelauan weaving group, Kiekie to showcase their crafts at the 2003 Pasifika Festival.

These positive results has increased our belief and determination in our ability to explore the potential opportunities this will create to Hoe Mua Designs and to the wider Pacific Island communities.
